Repayment Purgatory is a fantasy zine series following a young dropout wizard on his journey to repay the debt he owes from his many, many years of education. With a magic system inspired by biblical lore and a critical look at life after academia, I hope this series gives comfort to people who have felt abandoned and left behind by student debt and the pressures to succeed in life.

The young dropout, for now referred to as Mud, makes a deal with Captain Joanna to cross the ocean from Isrisael to Yscacia. In exchange for passage, Mud performs acts of great magic which impress Jonna and unsettle her crew. Issue 2

The young dropout meets Joanna’s contact, the headhunter, Hosea in the city of Decreveil. After some negotiating, Hosea begins looking for work for him under the name Job. Eventually, Job accepts a job from a rich merchant, arguably in the more trouble than Job himself. Multiple powerful men want the merchant dead, and he hires Job to keep him hidden or disguised so he can travel cross country to meet his beloved. The merchant has also hired a poet to help him propose and his childhood bestfriend to lead the expedition. Job must convince them all that he is indispensable, whether through magical or non-magical means, because it’s easier to solve their problems than face his own.

Issue 3

The young dropout is tore between working with the law and breaking them when he works with a lawyer to negotiate the repayment plan for his broken contract and doing a favor for a smuggler gang to deliver his payments discreetly. The lawyer is told he is doing this for “a friend” and the smugglers are anything but friendly. The young dropout must figure out what he is willing to sacrifice and what he won’t give up on as he finally settles into this new unpredictable life.
Issue 4

After six months of taking odd jobs and chipping away at his debt, the young dropout find himself back in Isrisael picking up a package for a absurd amount of money. When he find the people he was suppose to meet dead and the package missing, the young dropout must rely on an old friend to get this job done. Reuel, who affectionally calls him Cricket, is a hell expert charged with keeping order in this busy port town. Reuel helps Cricket investigate the crime and they find the package may not be worth the money or trouble. Leaving his old life behind may not be as easy as crossing the sea a second time.
Issue 5

The young dropout, under the name Balthazar, is hired by a archeologist to help with an expedition to a remote tower. The archeologist believes this tower may have been The Virgin Mary’s wizard’s tower that she fled to with her son, Jesus, after resurrecting him. The expedition is partially funded by a foreign noble and one of her wizards, a Earth expert known to Balthazar, also accompanies them. Balthazar quickly learns that there may be more forces working against them than just normal decay and wilderness. The Cult of Noah, devote followers of God, would rather the tower be destroyed than it’s secrets uncovered. Unfortunately they aren’t the ones paying Balthazar.
Issue 6

Reuel finds the young dropout to tell him that Keziah, his old mentor, is on his trail. Keziah, a expert in Eden that can command people to obey her will and tell her anything, is hard to hide from. Despite his objections, Reuel insists on helping him evade her. Joanna and Hosea also step up, even though they have no idea what they are facing. Of course, they can only evade Keziah for so long. The question is what will the young dropout do when faced with the magically order to “give up” when he already believes repaying his debt is impossible.
